How Do I Use the Search Results Page?
Once you have successfully performed a search, you will be presented with a screen listing all the well reports that matched your search criteria. The following section answers some of the questions you may have about the text search result screen.
How do I view a well report image?
For each well report listed, you can choose to view either the well report in Adobe PDF format or in its original TIFF 4 format. To view a pdf file, you will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. To view a TIFF image, similiarly, you will need a tiff viewer or any imaging tool that can read this format. To obtain these viewers, see the 'Viewing well report Images' sections on the Site Info page.
Can I download the data on the search result page?
To download the data, choose 'Download all (x) Records' at the top of the result page. You will be downloading a tab delimited ASCII text file.
When I download the data I don't get images
To download images (not data), choose 'Download all (x) Images' at the top of the result page. You will be downloading zip archive files with the images compressed within it.
I get a message saying my session has timed out, what does this mean?
This is typically caused when you are viewing the information by pages and you leave the page idle for 20 minutes OR if you have cookies disabled. Information about your requests is stored in "session" variables and your session identification is stored as a cookie on your machine. If you have cookies disabled, you will need to enable them before the paging portion of the application will work. If you are idle for 20 minutes or more on a query result screen, you will need to go back to the well report Query screen and re-submit your request before you can move to the next page.
What do the items listed on a search result mean?
There is a substantial amount of information provided on the "Text Search Results" page. The section below defines or describes elements found on this page.
Near the top of the "Text Search Results" page are five buttons. Each button is listed below with a brief description of what it does.
This button takes you back to the last page you were on, regardless of what page that was.
If you use this button to go back to the "Text Search" page, for instance, the search criteria you specified will still be present.
This button takes you to the "Text Search" page with all fields blanked out so that you can specify a new search.
Download all the images returned in your search. Images are grouped into 100 and separated into zip files.
This feature allows you to download a snapshot of well report data determined by your search. Data is in ASCII Text format.
You can print the current results page.
Well Owner Name
The owner name is typically the person who had the well constructed. Enter the first, last, or first and last name of the person for which you wish to search. The system will automatically return all names that contain the text you entered. For example, if you entered "A SMITH" the system brings back records such as "A C SMITH, "ANDREW SMITH", and "ART SMITH". You also get other Smiths that have an "A" somewhere in their first or middle name. This was done so that if you searched for "WALT", for instance, you could find the right well report listed as "WALTER". The report errors on the side of too many rather than too few. The same applies to your search result when you enter a company name.
Public Land Survey
This field provides location information for a well. The abbreviations T, R, and S stand for Township, Range, and Section(s). The Quarter and Quarter-Quarter areas of the Section follow them when available.
Township and Range
Public Land Surveyors defined Township and Range lines in the late 1800's. Townships run north and south and Ranges run east and west. In Washington Township numbers range from 1 north in Clark and Skamania counties to 40 north across our northern border. Range numbers go from 16 west in Clallam county to 45 east along the Idaho border.
Sections
Each Township is further divided into a grid of 36 sections. Each section is approximately 1 mile square. Click the check box beneath each (one or more) section you wish to search. At the bottom of the section grid are two choices. One turns on (checks) all the sections in that Township. The other clears all the checks that you may have already turned on.
1/4 Section
Each section is further divided into four 1/4 sections. They are defined by their quadrant name. NW is for the Northwest quadrant, NE for the Northeast quadrant, SW for the Southwest quadrant and SE for the Southeast quadrant. This data is not always available. Selecting it may cause you to not find a well report. If you are sure of the 1/4 section and use this criteria and do NOT find the well report, then do a new search leaving this field empty (blank).
1/4-1/4 Section
Each Township is divided into a grid of 36 sections. Each section is further divided into four equal parts (about 160 acres each) called Quarters. Each Quarter is then divided again into four 40-acre parts called a Quarter-Quarter. They are defined by their quadrant name. NW is for the Northwest quadrant of the Northwest quadrant, NE for the Northeast quadrant of the Northeast quadrant, SW for the Southwest quadrant of the Southwest quadrant, and SE for the Southeast quadrant of the Southeast quadrant. This data is not always available. Selecting it may cause you to not find a well report. If you are sure of the 1/4-1/4 section and use this criteria and do NOT find the well report, then do a new search leaving this field empty (blank).
Well Report ID
This field is a unique key for a given well report. It is a unique identifier that should be used (reported) when communicating with Water Resources staff at the Department of Ecology about a well report.
Well Tag ID
Beginning in June 1993, wells are by law to have been tagged with a numbered, metal tag.
Notice of IntentNumber
Well drillers file a notice of intent to construct a well called a Start Card. These are given a unique number. These notices are not searchable until the well report is received and its data has been entered into the Water Resources well report imaging system.
County
If you don't know the Township or if you want to limit the specified Township to a certain county, you can use the County selection. This will enable you to choose one of the thirty-six counties in Washington. You can elect to ignore the county selection by leaving or choosing the blank county option. For example, you can combine owner name and County to locate wells.
Well Address
The Well Address is the street address (or nearest address) of the property where the well was constructed. This information may or may not be the current address of the property due to address changes. It also may or may not be the address of the Well Owner.
Well Type
The type of well constructed. These include:
- W - Water Well and
- R - Resource Protection Well
Well Diameter
The Well Diameter is the diameter in inches of a well. It is reported to the nearest inch.
Well Depth
Depth of the finished well. This can be different than the actual depth drilled.
Well Completion Date
Date the well action (e.g., new, deepened, abandoned, etc.) was finished.
